If an employer fails to comply with the provisions of the proposed Bill, he will be liable to pay a fine of Rs 50,000. A meeting of the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh approved the introduction of the Protection of Women against Sexual Harassment at Workplace Bill, 2010, in the winter session of Parliament.

In another development, the Cabinet decided to host the “Informal ministerial dialogue on Climate Change- Technology Mechanism” on November 9-10 in cooperation with Mexico and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs. The international meet, that would see participation from around 50 nations would discuss and develop consensus on the design of a global technology mechanism for development, deployment and delivery of clean technologies in the context of climate change to developing countries.

The government also approved amendments to the over 50-year-old Merchant Shipping Act to bring rules in line with the international convention for removal of wrecks, as India will be acceding to the convention soon.

The Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure approved upgrading 600 km of roads in Orissa to complete the 1,632-km Left extremism-affected Vijayawada-Ranchi corridor in a phased manner. The project is expected to cost Rs 1,200 crore.

Besides improving the social and economic status of the tribals, the route will provide an efficient communication network in the remote areas to combat the extremists in the border tribal districts of the state.
