The government will take up fresh requests for setting up special economic zones, which have emerged as major sources of exports, on June 8.
"The meeting of the Board of Approval on Special Economic Zones (SEZs), to consider proposals for setting up of SEZs and other miscellaneous requests, is scheduled to be held on June 8," a Commerce Ministry official said today.
The inter-ministerial BoA is headed by Commerce Secretary Rahul Khullar. In the last meeting of the BoA, five developers were given go-ahead for their SEZ projects in which they get fiscal concessions and duty benefits.
As of now the government has given formal approvals for setting up 574 SEZs, of which 353 tax-free zones have been notified in the different parts of the country.
Exports from SEZs were valued at Rs 2.20 lakh crore in 2009-10, up 121.29 per cent from the previous fiscal.
