Greenpeace today released a ranking of Indian IT companies manufacturing computers on the basis of their waste management policies in a report called the Indian Guide to Greener Electronics.

Wipro topped the race, limited to just four computer manufacturers, of which two did not provide any data. Wipro scored 5.3 points out of 10 whereas HCL, the market leader, comes second with 1.7 points.

The electronics scorecard ranks companies on factors like company's chemical policy based on precautionary principles and chemicals management.

Asked about the race being confined to just four companies, Ramapati Kumar, in Greenpeace said: "We have followed the global methodology wherein we take into consideration factors like brand identity and market share."

"Despite their global pretensions, most Indian companies lag far behind their international counterparts in toxic management and e-waste. This clearly reflects their reluctance to offer green and clean products to the public in tune with global brands," Pranav Sinha, Greenpeace said.
