The Indian Platform for Shipbreaking, pioneered by Greenpeace, has decided to file an application to the Supreme Court against the committee's decision to allow the breaking of Norwegian ocean liner Blue Lady in Alang. |
The committe was appointed by the Supreme Court. |
"The technical committee has violated the mandate of Supreme Court. The committee has not submitted a single report to the court as per the norms laid down by the court and has taken the decision on their own. Besides aesbestos, the ship contains certain quantity of PCB which has been banned by the Indian government since 2003," said Rama Pati, Toxic Campaigner of Greenpeace. |
As per estimates, the ship contains about 1,200 tonnes of asbestos and other toxic materials. |
Also the ownership of the vessel has changed hands overnight, Pati further said. "We are going to file an application on Thursday," Pati said. |
