The Gujarat State Small Industries Federation (GSSIF) has sought the intervention of the Central and state governments to curb rising prices.

The umbrella organisation of small and medium-scale industries in the state said textile, garments, chemicals, engineering, foundry, forging, fabrication, machinery, auto parts, leather and plastic units are the worst hit as prices of raw materials have shot up over the past few months.

Maganbhai Patel, president of GSSIF, said representations have been made to both the central and state governments over the issue.

"Small and medium scale industries use molasses, petroleum products, furnace oil and several other raw materials. The prices of these have gone up substantially over the past few months. If the trend continues, the small industries will face a problem of survival," Patel, who is also vice-president of the Indian Council of Small Industries, said.

He added that prices of packing materials for pharmaceutical products and gelatin have also increased substantially.
