In a bid to check power theft and provide quality power to farmers in Gujarat, the state government has decided to come out with an ambitious scheme called "Khushi", as part of which farmers will be given independent transformers on their farms. Currently, farmers have to share a common transfomer to get power for irrigation.

"Initially, around 8,000 transformers were offered to various farmers during trial. Based on the success of the trial run, the Gujarat government now plans to implement the scheme in the entire state", said Saurabh Patel, Gujarat's minister of state for energy and petrochemicals.

The state government intends to spend Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000 crore under "Khushi Yojna" for providing independent transformers to farmers", he added. The cost for installation of transformers would entirely be borne by the state government.
