Posting a 19.17 per cent decadal growth, Gujarat has witnessed a rise in its population from 50.6 million to 60.3 million in Census 2011. Ranking the 10th populous state in the country with a share of five of country's population and six per cent of geographical area, Gujarat bettered the national growth of 17.64 per cent.
Sex ratio in 2011 stands at 918 in Gujarat as compared to 920 in 2001 and 934 in 1991 Censuses. "The state has been able to largely arrest the decline in sex ratio in the decade 2001-2011.
The state posted highest sex ratio of 1007 in The Dangs district and lowest sex ratio of 788 in Surat district. However, there has also been an impact of migration of male workers in Surat on the sex ratio in the city," said Manish Bharadwaj, Chief Principal Census Officer and Director of Census Operations, Gujarat.
Among cities, the decadal growth rate is highest in Surat at 42.19 per cent, followed by Kutch (32.03), Dahod (29.95), Banaskantha (24.43), Ahmedabad (22.31), The Dangs (21.44), Valsad (20.74) and Rajkot (19.87). Add to that, the top three districts of Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara constitute nearly 29 per cent of the state's population.
Posting a growth of 19.38 per cent, the state also saw a rise in density of population from 258 in 2001 to 308 in 2011, with highest density being observed in the district of Surat at 1,376, followed by Ahmedabad (890), Anand (711), Gandhinagar (660) and Navsari (602).
The state also bettered the national growth in literacy rate. As against an all India rise of 9.21 per cent in literacy rate, Gujarat posted a growth of 10.17 per cent.
In Census 2011, the effective literacy rate in Gujarat now stands at 79.31 per cent as against 69.14 per cent in 2001.For Census enumeration, in all 98037 enumerators and 16485 supervisors were deployed in 18225 villages and 348 towns of 225 talukas and seven municipal corporations in 26 districts of Gujarat.
