The Department of Post, Gujarat circle, will be introducing Logistics Post Service (LPS) from next month. In the first phase, the service will be started in Ahmedabad, connecting the city with Mumbai, Surat, Vapi, Daman, Gandhidham and Jaipur. |
The department also has plans to expand the services across other cities and towns in the western region with focus in Gujarat in near future. |
The Logistics Post service is a specialised service on regular basis in which goods and cargo will be delivered within 24 hours to its destination. |
Radhika Doraiswamy, chief postmaster general, Gujarat Circle, said, "The Logistics Post Service has the facility of pick up and delivery at the door-step of the customer and there will be no upper weight limit for a consignment. The consignments will be insured and all taxes, octroi, service tax will be paid by the customer." |
D K S Chauhan, director, postal services, Gujarat circle, said, "The new service will change the way postal department functions in the heavy goods and cargo segments. The Logistics Post service will be a time-bound service and the department will pick up documents and goods from the premises of the customers." |
Chauhan further said that the department has plans of hiring mini and big trucks. The department has already invited tenders for the purpose and it would finalise the private party within a fortnight, he added. |
"Our main focus is on bulk bookings from those private companies who are involved in heavy transportation of goods from Gujarat to Mumbai. Apart from private companies, we are also expecting bookings from the state government," he said. |
At present, there are 677 head post offices, 35 urban post offices, 44 extra-departmental sub-offices and 7,572 extra-departmental branch offices in Gujarat serving an area of 1,96,627 square km in the state. |
Meanwhile, Gujarat postal circle has added 11 more post offices in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar from where citizens will be able to get and submit passport applications. In the next phase, the facility will be made available from all the 35 head post offices of the Gujarat postal circle. |
