The Haryana Government envisages to bring an area of 16,306 hectares under a Centrally sponsored micro irrigation scheme during the current financial year.
Irrigation through micro irrigation system is highly beneficial for the farmers as it increases both quantity and quality of production due to integrated action of nutrients, water and air in the root zone. Irrigation with this system could be possible even in undulated land, saline and sandy soil.
Besides saving valuable natural resource ‘water’, it also resulted in saving in labour as there is no need of channel making for irrigation
As per a spokesman of the Irrigation Department out of the total proposed area, 5983 hectares of area would be brought under horticultural crop and 10,323 hectares under agricultural crop.
To cover this area under the scheme, Government of India has sanctioned a total outlay of Rs 28.67 crore, of which State Government’s share would be Rs 13.67 crore.
The spokesman said that under this scheme, 90 per cent financial assistance was provided and the farmers had to bear only 10 per cent cost of the micro irrigation technology.
Prior to launching of this scheme in the year 2006, the total area under micro irrigation was only 3736 hectares, which had now increased to 10,896 hectares.
