Wheat procurement in Haryana is nearing its completion. The state’s chances of bettering its own record for wheat arrival are slim. Harvesting of wheat is almost over in Haryana and wheat arrival in the terminal markets has started dipping.

Haryana has recorded 6.7 million tonnes of wheat arrival so far. This is the second highest arrival of wheat in the state. The highest wheat arrival was 6.9 million tonnes in 2009-10.

Compared to the average 40,000-50,000 tonnes of wheat arrival last week, this week the numbers have fallen to 20,000-25,000 tonnes.

Area under wheat cultivation in Haryana this year was around 2.5 million hectares as against the targeted 2.46 million hectares. Compared to 10.5 million tonnes of wheat produced last year, this year the production target is estimated at 11.4 million tonnes.

Food & Supplies Department, Haryana, will continue to procure wheat till May 31.

Wheat in terminal markets in Haryana is mainly procured by government agencies like Food & Supplies Department, Haryana State Cooperative Supply and Marketing Federation Limited (Hafed), Food Corporation of India (FCI) and Haryana State Federation of Consumers’ Cooperative Wholesale Stores (CONFED).

The wheat procured by government agencies ensures that farmers get the Minimum Support Price (MSP) as decided by the government. The government agencies also ensure that the produce is distributed through fair price shops at concessional rates to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) families across the country.

Over 2.349 million tonnes of wheat has been purchased by HAFED, over 1.766 million tonnes by Food and Supplies Department, over 819,000 tonnes by FCI, over 672,000 tonnes by Haryana Agro Industries Corporation, over 605,000 tonnes by Haryana Warehousing Corporation and over 496,000 tonnes by CONFED.
