Hat-trick for Congress in Delhi

Congress today retained power for the third consecutive term in Delhi, winning 40 seats in the 70-member assembly in a keenly fought electoral battle.

BJP, which was hoping to wrest power after 10 years, was left behind by 22 seats till counting for 66 seats were completed.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and all six of her cabinet colleagues were among the successful candidates of Congress.

Dikshit, the Chief Minister for past ten years, got 39,747 votes defeating BJP's Vijay Jolly, a one-time MLA, by a margin of 14,078 votes.

BJP chief ministerial face V K Malhotra was among the party candidates who won.

 

Om Prakash Chautala-led INLD sprang a surprise by winning Najafgarh seat while BSP bagged two seats, Gokulpuri and Badarpur. LJP also won one seat.

"There is no anti-incumbency rather there is always pro-incumbency," Dikshit said as Congress headed for a historic third term in power in Delhi.

"I congratulate the people of Delhi and many many thanks to them for their support and affection for the Congress," she added as jubilant party supporters danced to drumbeats and burst firecrackers.

Soon after the victory, Dikshit met party chief Sonia Gandhi.

Conceding defeat, BJP chief ministerial candidate Vijay Kumar Malhotra said the party's performance in the elections to the state had not been up to expectations.

"It is our defeat. The results in the assembly polls has not been on expected lines. We will certainly review why our candidates could not win in some seats that were considered our stronghold," Malhotra said.

Congress headed for a hatrick today in Delhi having bagged 28 out of 43 seats, results for which were available, leaving its rival BJP way behind with 13 seats.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and five of her cabinet colleagues were among the successful candidates of Congress in the keenly contested electoral battle for the 70-member House.

Dikshit, Chief Minister for past ten years, got 39,747 votes defeating BJP's Vijay Jolly by a margin of 14,078 votes. This is her third consecutive win in the Assembly elections, this time from the newly created New Delhi constituency following delimitation.

Ruling Congress won three seats in Delhi Assembly elections and was leading at 35 other constituencies while BJP was ahead at 26 seats in the 70-member Assembly.

Mukesh Sharma of Congress was the first to emerge victorious in the Delhi Assembly elections by defeating his nearest rival BJP's Pawan Sharma in Uttam Nagar by a margin of 7,187 votes.

Sharma, who is entering the Assembly for the fourth consecutive term, has shifted to Uttam Nagar constituency following delimitation.

Another two-time MLA who won this time was Mahabal Mishra. He defeated his nearest BJP rival Pradyuman Rajput by 13,981 votes.

In Jungpura, two-time MLA Tarvinder Singh Marwah defeated Akali Dal's Manjinder Singh Sirsa by a margin of 13,956 votes.

Ministers A K Walia (Laxmi Nagar), Arvinder Singh Lovely (Gandhi Nagar) and Yoganand Shastri (Mehrauli) were ahead in the race.

Ministers Harun Yusuf (Ballimaran) and Raj Kumar Chouhan (Mangolpuri), who were initially trailing, were now ahead in the race.

Delhi Assembly Speaker Chaudhury Prem Singh, who has never lost an election since 1958, is leading in Ambedkar Nagar.

Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan is trailing in Krishna Nagar constituency.

Congress is leading Vishwas Nagar, Kasturba Nagar, Rohtas Nagar, Patel Nagar, Uttam Nagar and Dwarka while BJP is ahead in Shakur Basti, Patparganj and Karol Bagh.
