HCC succeeds in diverting Jhelum at dam site

Hindustan Construction Company (HCC), the leading engineering construction company, engaged in the construction of Uri Hyrdoelectric power project stage "�II (over river Jhelum) and two more similar power projects in Leh and Kargil districts of Ladakh region, has accomplished the arduous task of diverting river Jhelum at diversion tunnel at the dam site location.
 
This significant phase, which is the first step in the construction of 240 Mw power generation project of the NHPC, has been completed at a brisk pace since project operations began two years back.
 
The company engineers have successfully completed the construction of diversion tunnel in a short time frame considering that the project area is prone to incessant rains and snowfall for three to four months in a year.
 
A senior HCC official told the Business Standard that the Himalayan region poses complex challenges for infrastructure building which demand technical and engineering expertise and understanding of local conditions.
 
The company's long experience in these mountainous areas has always helped our people engaged in the projects to complete the task before the target time frame.
 
Uri Hydroelectric Power Project Phase-II is a project of the NHPC with a contract value of Rs 575 crore.
 
The project includes construction of the dam, under ground power house of 240 Mw capacity, head -race tunnel , diversion tunnel, surge shaft and pressure shaft.
 
He further said HCC commenced work on the project in January 2005 and was scheduled to complete the job in September 2009.
 
The project is at a considerably advanced stage at various site locations and expected to be completed much before the scheduled time.
 
The company has built several landmark projects in India's hydro-power and water resources sector, with at least ten of them situated in the geologically challenged Himalayan region.
