Of the 51 public sector undertakings (PSUs) under the ministry of heavy industries and public enterprises, only eight have managed to achieve or exceed their production targets in June 2002. The only navratna in the ministry roster, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (Bhel), too, has fallen short of its target by Rs 24 crore.
The eight PSUs that met or exceeded their production targets in the month include Bridge & Roof Company, Bharat Pumps & Compressors, Engineering Projects India, HMT (International), Hindustan Paper Corporaton, National Industrial Development Corporation, Rajasthan Electronics & Instruments and Sambhar Salts. Overall, the PSUs fell short of the target by Rs 156.55 crore, with a production worth Rs 702.32 crore in the month, thereby achieving 81.77 per cent of the production target. Against this, production worth Rs 100.77 crore was recorded in June 2001.
The engineering and non-engineering units under the department have also not been able to meet their production targets, whereas consultancy and contract units have surpassed their targets by Rs 9.07 crore. Cumulative production performance during April-June 2002 shows that the PSUs have fallen short of target by Rs 309.46 crore while registering production worth Rs 1,655.21 crore.
