BS Reporter Mumbai/ Ahmedabad

Farmers in Gujarat heaved a sigh of relief as rains lashed across the state resulting in 10 per cent of season’s total rainfall in the past two days. While southern and central parts of Gujarat witnessed heavy rains, Saurastra and northern areas of the state received medium rainfall.

The arid regions of Kutch and Surendranagar, which were the worst hit, received 1 to 2 inch rainfall.

The rainfall in the past two days drastrically improved the situation in the Panchmahals, Dahod, Vadodara, Bharuch, Kheda and Anand districts, which had received less rains as compared to last year. These areas received rainfall ranging from 2 inch to 15 inch in the past 24 hours. Heavy rains continued to lash parts of south Gujarat.

Heavy rains threw life out of gear in cities like Ahmedabad and Vadodara.

The rains have given a boost to crops such as cotton, groundnut, paddy, oilseeds amongst others.

Castor sowing is likely to start from August in north Gujarat. The state government has issued a high alert at as many as 22 reservoirs and sounded alert at 14 reservoirs.
