The Uttarakhand government is planning to provide succour to the public against last night’s steep hike in prices of petrol.

“We will surely give some relief to our people in petrol,” said Khanduri, who criticised the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre for increasing petrol prices.

Top officials here said the relief would be up to Rs 1 against the hike of Rs 3.

Comparing the prices of essential food items during the National Democratic Alliance government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the UPA government led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, a ruling BJP spokesman here alleged that there had been a phenomenal rise in the prices of all essential items during the past seven years, making life miserable for the common people.

In June, the state government had announced a similar relief in value-added tax on the prices of petroleum products.
