Former First Lady Hillary Clinton has a huge early advantage over her fellow Democratic rivals seeking to enter the 2008 Presidential race but the road to White House may not be easy for the New York senator who has a relatively "unfavourable" image, according to a latest survey.

Clinton, wife of former US President Bill Clinton, has a 41% backing among Democrats and independents who lean toward the Democratic Party, according to a national poll by The Washington Post and ABC News.

Senator Barack Obama, who could be the first black President of the country, is far behind with just 17% votes.

However, Clinton had a 54% favourable rating as opposed to an unfavourable rating of 44%, seen as a high in many quarters.

In party affiliation, Clinton comes away with a 82% favourable rating within Democrats as opposed to 18% within Republicans and has a favourable standing of 59% among Independents.

But, the national poll is showing Clinton coming away with a particularly popular showing among women in the age group of between 18 and 34 with a 66% backing.

Also nearly 60% of women aged 55 and older have a favourable view of her compared with 48% last year.
