Hiring activity in Kolkata down 3 per cent in July

Hiring activity in Kolkata declined by 3 per cent in July compared to June this year, according to a Naukri JobSpeak, the monthly job index released by Naukri.com. The index moved from 775 in June to 750 in July. However, market sentiment remains positive with recruitment index expected to move up post September.

Information technology (IT) industry remained in the green with hiring activity up by 4 per cent in IT-software, 7 per cent up in IT-hardware and networking and 3 per cent up in ITeS and BPO.

Banking and financial services was down by 7 per cent, while insurance was down by 3 per cent. Construction and engineering industry saw an improvement in hiring by 4 per cent during the month.

 

On the national level, the index edged up by 1.3 per cent backed by the slight improvement in hiring activity in IT-software and BPO industries. The index scaled to 727 in July as compared to 718 in June .

“The uptrend over consecutive months is encouraging. Improvement in hiring activity in lagging industries, such as IT, real estate, retail and auto, echoes optimism. However, continued increase in hiring activity over the next few months will indicate a turnaround in economic activity and in hiring,” said Sumeet Singh, national head – marketing and communications, Info Edge, the holding company for Naukri.com.

Among other cities, Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad saw an improvement, while Chennai and Pune saw a dip in hiring activity. Hiring was up in sectors like pharma, auto and IT industry. July 2009 witnessed an increase in demand for people with over eight years of work experience.

On total jobs (this includes refreshed jobs), the index moved down by 1.8 per cent from 818 in June to 802 in July.
