Qaumi Mushawarat Committee (QMC) convenor Javed Habeeb yesterday demanded that the central government should convene a meeting of the National Integration Council (NIC) by August 13 to discuss various issues confronting Muslims, particularly the communitys long-pending demand that the Babri Masjid be rebuilt at its original site.

In case the government failed to convene an NIC meeting by August, the QMC would launch a nationwide agitation in order to mobilise public opinion in favour of its agenda, Habeeb said.

The other issues in the QMCs agenda are release of TADA (Terrorist and disruptive activities prevention act) detenus and taking up of various welfare measures for the advancement of the community. To elicit support of defence minister Mulayam Singh Yadav for its cause, the QMCs members would sit on a day-long dharna in front of Yadavs Delhi residence, he said, adding that it was on February 1, 1986, that the locks of the disputed site at Ayodhya was first opened.

Yadav is the one among national leaders who understands the problems of the Muslims well, Habeeb added.
