With an aim to boost investment in the state, the Himachal Pradesh government has decided to exempt multiplexes, cinema halls that have multiple screens,  from paying 10 per cent entertainment duty, official sources said today.

The state Cabinet at a recent meeting presided over by Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal gave its approval to exempt multiplexes from paying entertainment duty, Chief Secretary Asha Swaroop told PTI.

The duty waiver would be given to multiplexes coming into operation between May 2007 and May 2012, sources in the state Excise & Taxation department said.

The exemption forms part of the state Industrial Policy, 2004, Commissioner State Excise & Taxation J C Sharma said.

Sharma said one multiplex is already functional in the famous tourists destination of Manali while a new one is coming at industrial hub in Baddi-Barotiwala.
