Hyderabad varsity to have life sciences facility

A world-class centre of excellence in life sciences research is going to come up at the University of Hyderabad.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed here by the university registrar, Y Narsimhulu, and G V Prasad, the director of Institute of Life Sciences yesterday.

Kota Harinarayana, the university vice-chancellor, B P Acharya, the secretary (industries & commerce), A Venkaeswarlu, a member of the State Biotech Advisory Board, G Subramanyam, the project director of Life Sciences Institute, and the faculty members of the university were present on the occasion.

Harinarayana stated in a press release that the institute would provide the ideal platform for industry-academia partnership.

He also mentioned about the proposal to set up a science incubator and science park at the university for research in the new frontiers of sciences such as nano technology, biomedical engineering etc.

Prasad observed that major pharma and biotech companies could get actively involved in this initiative, which would emulate the world-class models like John Hopkins Institute and Scripps Institute in the US.

BP Acharya assured all help from the state government for the initiative which, he said, would put Hyderabad on the world map of life sciences research.
