ICSA India, the Hyderabad-based software services company, has delivered a remote monitoring and controlling solution to the Andhra Pradesh Central Power Distribution Company (APCPDCL).

The solution addresses the specific requirements of power utilities in the areas of energy audit, monitoring, remote switching and control. The encrypted system has a built-in security features that avert any sabotage effort and curbs the distribution losses of the power utilities, claimed G Bala Reddy, chairman and managing director of ICSA at a press conference here on Saturday.

As a pilot trial, the distribution company has remotely switched on a rural power supply feeder at Shadnagar electric sub-station from the CPDCL's supervisory control and data acquisition (scada) centre in the city on Saturday.

" Presently, about 45 per cent of the power generated is getting lost on account of pilferage, transmission and distribution losses and poor monitoring systems. The new solution will curb these losses by at least 60 per cent," Reddy claimed. The company is now bidding for a contract from the Uttar Pradesh state electricity board and is planning to contend for other distribution companies within AP.

The solution developed by the company in association with another city-based firm, Sigma Microsystems. Explaining the features of the solution, Surendran Nagilla, Sigma's director said that it has to be deployed at three interfaces, the 33/11 KV sub-station, distribution transformer and the consumer.

It transfers the data to the control room through telephone lines, wireless (including GSM), power line carrier or a cable network. The solution also finds application in water supply, irrigation and other industries like transport and mining. Sigma is now developing a power line carrier communication based solution for the power sector's energy audit programmes.
