IIT Gandhinagar to start operations from 2008-09

Each programme will have 40 seats with a total of 120 intake for the IIT. The state government has said that the IIT Gujarat campus would come up in the Knowledge Corridor situated between Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad.

However, till the new campus is fully constructed, the IIT will start operations in the Vishwakarma Engineering College, Chandkheda. The IIT will offer a five year B.Tech degree course. The state government is working on the creation of a Gujarat Techonology Uiversity and Gujarat knowledge Corporation. IIT Bombay's extension campus in Gandhinagar has recently started operations.

 

Besides, Gujarat could also have its first Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT). Industry body Nasscom has recommended setting up of an IIIT in Ahmedabad as one of the 20 locations where the institute could be built. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) presented by Nasscom has identified a major role for private organisations in terms of finance, faculty and resources. Each of the IIITs has been proposed to be set up as a fully autonomous institution, through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
