India’s premier Indian Institute of Management, Kanpur (IIT-K) partnered with digital media company Yahoo India to organise University Hack Day event ‘HACK U’ in the campus.
Conceptualised along the lines of Open Hack Day, the event got students to work on product ideas while developing innovative hacks in the 24-hour non-stop ‘Hackathon’.
About 150 students participated in the recent four-day event of learning, hacking and fun, which is part of Yahoo’s ongoing programme to nurture talent and innovation among the students.
Earlier, a similar event had been organised at IIT, Kharagpur.
On its part, IIT-K said the institute would welcome such partnerships in future as well.
The event allowed students to innovate and create next generation of products for consumers by developing applications using Yahoo's Open APIs (Application Programming Interface) like YAP, YQL, YUI & BOSS, and even create a new product concept using other technologies.

Additionally, ‘HACK U’ facilitated students to interact with web experts at Yahoo, receive hacking tips and lessons, and gain hands-on exposure to cutting-edge applications and technologies.
“Such workshops enable students to test new ideas for web applications and interact with lead engineers and experts from internet companies like Yahoo. We look forward to more such interactions with Yahoo in future,” IIT-K Computer Science & Engineering department head Harish Karnick said.
The hacking session saw innovative winning entries by students such as automated reservation query, which predicts chances of train ticket getting confirmed and keeping users informed periodically on the latest reservation status.
