The soda ash industry that employs around 1.50 lakh people along the Saurashtra coast in Gujarat is facing a crisis with the Centre reducing import duty on soda ash.
The units here that supply soda ash to various parts of the country for the last four decades are finding it difficult to compete with imports which currently enjoy a 20 per cent duty relief, industry sources said.
The units have the potential to meet 85 per cent of the country
