Data released by commerce ministry today showed that in the April to March period of 2007-08, import of sensitive items stood at Rs 28,664 crore, which is an increase of 0.5 per cent over Rs 28,508 crore seen in the same period of 2006-07.
Sensitive items have a share of 3.4 per cent in the Indian commodity import basket.
Import of food grains as well as milk and related products declined during the period under consideration. In the same period, import of edible oil, fruit and vegetables (including nuts), cotton and silk, automobiles, products of small scale industries, rubber, spices, alcoholic beverages, marble and granite and tea and coffee increased.
Imports of sensitive items from Indonesia, Canada, China, United States of America, Sri Lanka , Brazil, Germany, Tanzania, Thailand, Japan, United Kingdom, Nepal went up while that from Argentina, Myanmar, Russia, Cote D' Ivoire, Malaysia, Australia, Ukraine declined in the period under consideration.
