In fluid situation

Like the rest of the country, Haryana with its 10 Lok Sabha seats that go to the polls on 7 May is in a fluid situation. A thin margin can make or mar several political futures.

In the four years of a Congress regime under Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the state has managed to achieve several milestones. Hence, the Congress campaign is mainly banking upon the development projects taken up by the state government.

There is an apparent lack of a wave. Local issues have overshadowed national ones. The voters here are not much concerned about the national security and Indian black money in Swiss banks. The accessibility of the parliamentarians will play a crucial role in electing the candidates.

While Deepinder Hooda, son of chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, is a strong contender from Rohtak on a Congress ticket due his frequent visits in the constituency and the personal attention paid to the local problems, Shailja Kumari (Congress) is on a sticky wicket for staying from the Ambala (reserved) constituency.

Former chief minister and political stalwart Bhajan Lal, who floated his own political outfit Haryana Janhit Congress breaking away from Congress, has an aura in his constituency Hissar and is believed to be on a sound footing.

Mewat, the most backward belt in Haryana that falls in the Gurgaon constituency, may help the Bahujan Samaj Party to set its foot in Haryana as the belt has a Muslim votebank and the candidate picked up by Mayawati is projected to be a mass leader.

The BSP may also give a tough competition to Congress in Kurukshetra where industrialist and MP Naveen Jindal is contesting again on a Congress ticket.

The aide of Rahul Gandhi, Ashok Tanwar, is fighting in Sirsa (reserved) and INLD candidate Sita Ram is on equal footing with him.

The battle between Shruti Choudhary (granddaughter of late Bansi Lal) and Ajay Chautala (grandson of late Devi Lal) from Bhiwani- Mahendergarh is going to be interesting.

There is also lack of political awareness in Haryana. Female voters who constitute half of the votebank cast their vote on the recommendation of their spouse or anybody without even knowing the name of the candidate.
