Global coffee exports have slumped by 5.2 per cent to 78.45 million bags in the first ten months of the 2009-10 crop year, though shipments jumped in India and Indonesia, says UK-based international coffee body.
The exports stood at 82.73 million bags, 60 kg each, in the same period last year. The coffee crop year runs from October to September.
"Exports in the first 10 months of the 2009-10 coffee year have decreased by 5.2 per cent to 78.45 million bags," the International Coffee Organisation (ICO) said.
The decline in the overseas coffee sales was seen from key exporting countries Brazil, Vietnam and Columbia, it said.
The shipments from Vietnam, the world's second largest coffee exporter, fell maximum by 17.3 per cent to 12.81 million bags till July of the current crop year, against 15.49 million bags in the year-ago period.
Similarly, exports from Brazil, the world's largest coffee exporter, fell by 6.38 per cent to 24.78 million bags from 26.47 million bags, while that of Columbia declined to 6.07 million bags against 7.74 million bags in the review period, ICO data showed.
However, exports from Indonesia, the world's third largest coffee exporter, rose to 5.42 million bags from 5.16 million bags in the review period.
India's coffee exports surged by 50 per cent to 3.79 million bags till July of 2009-10 crop year, against 2.52 million bags in the same period last year.
ICO said the world coffee production in 2009-10 is expected to be around 120 million bags, a fall of 6.3 per cent from last year.
