Global financial services major Barclays today said that it considers India as a country of enormous opportunities and wants to further strengthen its India business.

"We see India as a country with enormous potential. Our business here is successful and we want to see it grow further," Barclays Chairman Marcus Agius told reporters here.

"We are feeling that this is a time of opportunity and India is a country of opportunities," he added.

The Indian government can take a good degree of pride in the way it handled the economy during the recent global economic crisis, Agius said.

"The external perspective of India in the rest of the world has been growing very rapidly and part of that is to do with the strength of the Indian economy," he said.

Speaking about the recent economic crisis, he said that Barclays faced strong challenges but still had managed to remain profitable. "We had a crisis but we did not take money from the government and remained profitable in every reporting during the crisis," he said.

"We made a significant acquisition...We bought the North American business of Lehman Brothers which has been a great boost to our investment banking business," he said.
