India Outperforms Pak, But Is 16 Years Behind China

India has overtaken its neighbour Pakistan but lags significantly behind China in terms of economic growth and human development indicators (HDI), according to the latest Human Development Report published by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The data in the report suggests that in terms of the HDI index, the three Asian neighbours are still years apart. Pakistan now roughly stands where India was in 1990. But on the same parameter, India is now where China was in 1985.

However, the demographic trends suggest that by 2015, India is likely to have a younger population than China. By then, nearly 30 per cent of India
