India's fruits, veggies production estimated to rise this yr

India's production of vegetables and fruits is estimated to increase by nearly 6% and 5% respectively in the current year as compared to previous year, Parliament was informed today.

Production of vegetables during 2010-11 is estimated to be 141.3 tonnes against 133.5 tonnes in 2009-10, Minister of State for Agriculture Arun Yadav said in a written reply in Lok Sabha.

Similarly, the output of the fruits is expected to rise by nearly 5% in the current year to 75.7 million tonnes from 72.2 million tonnes in the previous year, he said quoting figures from National Horticulture Board (NHB).

India is 2nd largest producer of Fruits & Vegetable in the world.

 

The minister said that during 2008-9, 0.69% of total production of fruits and 1.69% of total vegetable production was exported.
