India showcases military might at R-Day parade

Images of India's military and economic prowess, its vibrant culture and rich heritage today unfolded on the majestic Rajpath here as the nation celebrated the 57th Republic Day amidst tight security in view of terror threats.

A grand and colourful parade, the main attraction of the annual event, marched through the boulevard overlooking the magnificient Rashtrapati Bhawan as President A P J Abdul Kalam took salute.

Uniformed military and para-military columns, colourful tableaux symbolising the diverse culture, state-of-the-art weaponary and hundreds of beautifully-attired school children performing dances formed part of the national event.

The gala parade was watched by Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud, King of Saudi Arabia who was the chief guest, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the military and political top brass besides thousands of men, women and children who reached the venue braving an early morning nip in the air.
