India may be short of skilled teachers but is quickly emerging a sourcing hub for schools around the world.

While Indian teachers have been teaching in schools in the West Asia, particularly the United Arab Emirates, for quite some time, many more vacancies are up for grabs in countries stretching from the US and UK to Singapore and South Korea.

With the Chinese government laying emphasis on teaching English to children, a large demand from Beijing and the coastal cities is expected in the coming years.

The Singapore High Commission in India has approached the ministry of human resources development with a plea to help it hire trained teachers.

An official with a multilateral trade body said the British High Commission might soon start helping out schools looking for mathematics teachers. A British High Commission official, however, said the government was not undertaking any recruitment exercise.

He added that schools were looking for teachers on their own. Schools from the UK and the US are depending on headhunters to do the scouting.

Mathematics, science and English teachers are in maximum demand, but some schools, especially in the UAE, are also on the lookout for French teachers and counsellors.
