Size of domestic technical textiles industry, which produces specialised variants of the commodity used for industrial purposes, may almost double by 2014-15 from the estimated $10 billion at present, a study said today.
The reason for growth of the sector is increasing consumption of these items mainly by the middle-class, the Assocham study said.
"The domestic technical textiles market is estimated to grow at an average annual rate of over 10-12 per cent in the next four to five years because of high demand," Assocham President Swati Piramal said in a statement.
The study said, the sector's major driving applications are medical textiles, automotive textiles, geo textiles and hygienic products.
Assocham has recommended that the Indian textile industry should have a multi-prong strategy to ensure development of agro shade net fabrics, chemical protective fabrics and multi-layer sportswear fabrics.
