Forget model police stations -that's passe. Now it is the ISO 9001 certification that is gaining currency among police stations. The Chhoti Gwaltoli (CG) police station in Indore is all set to become the first police station in north India to bag the ISO-9001 certification.

It has passed muster in the internal audit that was done in the third week of November by the local representatives of Joint Accreditation Society of Australia and New Zealand (JAS-ANZ) and the formal certification is likely to be received within a week.

There are only 11 such police stations in the country-that boast of similar certification, all of them in Hyderabad.

A quality Manual for ISO-9001 has been prepared by CG Police station, which will be strictly followed.

In the manual, the details of what has to be done have been noted down-right from the duties of the cops and their behaviour towards people who come in with complaints. The essence is to ensure customer satisfaction and here the customer is the common man who comes to police station to register a complaint, or to report an incident.

The local representative of JAS-ANZ Amritpal Singh Dhaliwal and Ravi Gaekwad told Business Standard the satisfaction should be both with regard to the general ambience (piped music) of the police station and the attitude of the men at the police station-there will be close circuit television cameras to record everything.

So the police stations are ranked according to their neatness and cleanliness and the comfort levels they offer to the complainants, cops on duty and also to those who are locked up.

The response time of the police to incidents, behaviour towards complainants should also be of a high standard. A register would be kept at police stations, where those who come to the police station-both the complainant and the accused -will be given an opportunity to do their own assessment.
