Inflation At 4.03 Per Cent

Despite a fall in the prices of primary articles, the rate of inflation crossed the 4 per cent mark for the first time in 2002, ending at 4.03 per cent for the week ended September 28.

The annual rate of inflation for the previous week was at 3.77 per cent.

The wholesale price index (WPI) for the week stood unchanged at 167.8. The index for primary articles declined 0.1 per cent to 177.4 from 177.5 for the previous week and 168.3 a year ago due to a fall in the prices of jowar (4 per cent), eggs (3 per cent) and maize, gram and masur (1 per cent each).

 

The index for food articles remained unchanged at 183.8. The index for non-food articles declined 0.3 per cent to 165.8 from 166.3 for the previous week. The index for mineral group was up 0.1 per cent to 120 from 119.9 for the previous week.

The index for fuel, power, light and lubricants remained unchanged at previous week's level of 238.8. The index for manufactured goods was up 0.1 per cent at 148.7 from 148.6 for the previous week and 144.3 a year ago.

The index for machinery and machine tools rose 0.1 per cent to 130.3 from 130.2 for the previous week. However, prices of material handling equipment declined 1 per cent.

The index for transport equipment and parts rose 0.1 per cent to 146.4 from 146.2 for the previous week because of higher prices of bicycles (2 per cent).
