Inflation dips to 4.36% despite steeper prices

Riding on a higher base effect, the wholesale price index based inflation
declined to 4.36% for the week ended July 21, 2007 from 4.41% in the previous week, even though price indices of all major categories increased.

During the week ended July 21, WPI increased by 20 basis points to 213.1 whereas WPI increased by 30 basis points to 204.2 during the same period last year, causing a base effect. Inflation rate stood at 4.72% for the week ended July 22 last year.

The government today also revised rate of inflation for the week ended May 26 to 5.15% from the provisional figure of 4.85%.
