Inflation dropped 0.12% to an eight-month low of 5.25% for the week
ended January 29 despite costlier fruits and vegetables.

The point-to-point inflation based on the wholesale price index (WPI) fell from the previous week's level of 5.37% mainly due to the fall in the price of edible oils while fuel prices remained firm.

The inflation was as at 5.91% in the year-ago period.

The WPI went up by 0.1% to 188.5 points due to an increase in the price of mass consumption primary items like vegetables and fruits, and manufactured products including sugar and salt. The WPI was at 179.1 points in the year-ago period.

The government revised inflation upwards to 7.07% for the week ended December 4 instead of the provisional level of 7.02%. The final WPI stood corrected at 189.2 points during the first week of December as against the provisional figure of 189.1 points.
