The annual point-to-point rate of inflation for the week ended June 30 went up to 5.16 per cent on account of a rise in prices of primary articles and manufactured products. The wholesale price index (WPI) based inflation in the previous week was 5.03 per cent, its lowest level in over one year. The WPI-based inflation level based on the final index for "all commodities" for the week ended May 5 was 5.61 per cent as against 5.41 per cent reported on the basis of the provisional index.

The inflation level was 6.47 per cent in the corresponding week last year.

At a disaggregated level, the index for primary articles rose by 0.2 per cent during the week while that for manufactured products rose by 0.1 per cent.

The index for the third major group of fuel, power, light and lubricants remained unchanged at the previous week's level of 222.7.

Within the major group of primary articles, the index for the sub-group of food articles rose by 0.4 per cent mainly due to a 7.8 per cent rise in vegetable prices and a 3 per cent rise in fish prices. However, prices of maize fell by 4 per cent, and that of jowar, urad and spices fell by 3 per cent each.

The non-food articles index fell by 0.1 per cent on account of a 1 per cent fall in prices of raw cotton and tobacco while prices of fodder fell by 3 per cent.

The index for manufactured products went up mainly on account of a rise in the indices for the sub-groups of food products and of machinery and machine tools. While the index for the former went up by 0.5 per cent, driven by a 10 per cent rise in gingelly oil prices, 7 per cent rise in cotton seed oil and 5 per cent rise in rice bran oil, the index for the latter went up on account of a sharp 23 per cent rise in textile machinery prices, 10 per cent rise in ring spinning and doubling frames and 6 per cent rise in carding machine prices.
