It has been learnt that CII has already handed over the report to the state government as a comprehensive input to finalise its tourism policy, that will be announced in September.

Total 26 destinations were surveyed by Dalal Mott which include the Union territory of Daman and Diu and in almost all of the places. CII has found lack of infrastructure as main reason for not much happening in the tourism sector.

The report, Tourism in Gujarat - The Way Ahead, prepared in July 2003, recommends upgradations and maintenance of state highways, upkeeping and renovation of archaeological monuments and strengthening infrastructure facilities at pilgrimage destinations.

It recommends decent staying facilities if not luxury ones at pilgrimage destinations. To cite a few examples, the Dalal Moptt MacDonald survey states that there is a need to improve approach roads to tourist and pilgrimage destinations including Dwarka, Porbander, Somnath, Sasan Gir, Junagadh, Ahmedpur Mandvi, Palitana, Siddhpur, Ubhrat and Dakor.

Similarly, there is a need to improve the internal road network in destinations like Dwarka, Porbander, Somnath, Dakor, Sasan Gir, Chorwad, Ahmedpur Mandvi, Ubhrat, Tithal, Saputara, Daman and Ajwa.

The report states that better accommodation needs to be set up at Bet Dwarka, Somnath, Kachchh Mandvi, Siddhpur, Ambaji, Ubhrat and Tithal, while monuments of historic and archaeological importance at Modhera, Lothal, Porbander, Somnath, Junagadh fort and museum, Patan, Siddhpur, Satardi-Bhuj, Pavagadh and Ahmedabad need upgradation and maintenance.

Lack or inadequate local conveyance has been observed in destinations like Dwarka, Sasan Gir, Chorwad, Ahmedpur, Mandvi Bhuj, Ubhrat, Saputara and Ajwa. Good restaurants were found to be unavailable at Dwarka, Porbander, Somnath, Junagadh fort and museum, Satardi, Patan, Siddhpur, Pavagadh and Bhucharaji.

The report also states that signboards to assist tourists are inadequate at Dwarka, Porbander, Junagadh, Rajkot and Kachchh Mandvi. |
