The government today said that independent power producers (IPPs) would add 16,000 MW by the end of the Eleventh Five-Year Plan.

"The capacity target of independent power producers is 20,000 MW by the end of the plan, out of which 3,700 MW has already been commissioned," Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde told reporters here.

At present, the country is facing a deficit of 15,000-20,000 MW.

When asked about Delhi's power situation, Shinde said that at present there is 4,500 MW and a further 4,000 MW would be commissioned before the Commonwealth Games next year.

Delhi will be power-surplus by the Commonwealth Games of 2010, he added.
