Bilateral trade between India and Israel is expected to cross the $2 billion mark this year.

India being an important trade partner of Israel in the Asean region, more and more areas of co-operation are likely to be brought under the ambit of the thriving bilateral relations between the two countries, according to the Israeli ambassador to India, David Daneli.

Daneli said that a large number of his country's businessmen were keen to engage in trade relations with their counterparts in Andhra Pradesh.

Addressing a seminar on 'Indo-Israel bilateral relations-emerging opportunities for Andhra Pradesh', organised by the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Fapcci), the Israeli ambassador said that telecom, IT, agro-based industry, bio-technology, water-management and pharma were among the important areas of cooperation between Andhra Pradesh and the Israel.

"As compared to a mere three per cent of the population of Israel which is dependent on agriculture, in Andhra Pradesh despite fast growing sectors like IT and Telecom close to sixty to seventy per cent of the population still depends on the agricultural sector. This is an area for focussed cooperation," he told the gathering.

He wondered as to why paddy and sugarcane crops were being irrigated through the traditional flooding method in the state when it was proved unnecessary in Israel.

The state's rural development minister D Srinivas and minor irrigation minister A Chandrasekhar participated in the seminar.

They appealed for greater co-operation and trade relations between Israel and Andhra Pradesh, especially in agriculture and irrigation.
