Just going by the back-of-the-envelope-calculations, the new and existing IT companies in Hyderabad are expected to generate employment for about 50,000 people in the next 12 to 18 months, which is a record of sorts compared to the past figures.

Look at this : All these years, since the IT boom started in 1998, the IT industry in Andhra Pradesh could generate 71,445 jobs as on March 31,2003. Of this, about 25,000 people are working in the IT-Enabled services (ITES) and business process outsourcing industry.

As on March 31,1999 there were just 12,000 people employed by the IT firms in the state including support staff.

During the booming years of 1999-2000 and 2000-01, IT companies in the state could create 14,000 and 32,000 new jobs respectively to reach a respectable 58,000 mark.

The next year (2001-02) was a worse period for the industry with just 6,000 people added to the roasters and 2002-03 was slightly better with over 7,000 jobs getting created.

In the current fiscal the situation seems to have changed dramatically with more than 10,000 new jobs expected to be generated by the expanding operations of the existing companies and new companies coming in.

Industry people say that next year would be historical in terms of new jobs created, which is expected to be anywhere between 25,000 to 40,000.

Here are some interesting manpower plans for the next 12 to 18 months: Dell Computers, which is setting up its help desk and call center here has plans to take in over 5,000 people.

Says, R Dhirendra, the chief executive officer of Eduequity, which was assigned the career assessment job for Dell - we were given a mandate to assess 8,000 agents.

Microsoft's 2,000 seater technical helpdesk center is expected to recruit 2,000 people by end of December 2004 on conservative estimates. TCS, GE Capital International and HSBC electronic data processing will double from their existing strengths of 2,000 people each.

Virtusa has announced its plans to double its staff strength from the existing 1,000 people. Kanbay will have 2,000 people while CSC India, Cognizant, Bose Corporation and Wilco too have announced aggressive hiring plans. Going by these estimates, it seems IT industry is poised for the next boom phase.

AP drops move on Data Protection bill

The Andhra Pradesh government has dropped its plans to legislate the Data Protection and Consumer Privacy Act.

The government thought of bringing the act into force as a means of providing regulatory framework for the protection of sensitive customers
