The Jammu and Kashmir government plans to strengthen the Crop Insurance Scheme so that the farmers are protected from any crop losses due to natural calamities, state Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir said today.

Interacting with members of a farming community in Tangmarg, 45 km from here in Baramulla district, Mir advised them to adopt the double crop system to get more yield from the land under cultivation.

He asked the farmers to take agriculture practices more seriously and supplement efforts to ensure self sufficiency in foodgrain production in the state.

"The scientists of SKUAST (Sher-I-Kashmir University of Agriculture Science and Technology) and experts of the Agriculture Department would be asked to visit and guide farmers in growing more yield," Mir said.

The minister said that he would ensure to make agriculture a profitable sector by throwing open job opportunities for the youth.

Urging people to encourage work culture, Mir asked them to cooperate with the administration in this regard.

He asked youth to take full benefit of welfare schemes like NREGA instead of craving for petty job engagements. However, he said the Government is aware of the problems of youth and is exploring possibilities for creating job avenues for them.
