After a procurement holiday of 20 days, the merchants started purchasing jaggery from September 27 onwards under heavy pressure from the jaggery producers.
To encash this situation, traders are offering low prices, even though farmers are coming forward to sell their stocks for want of money because of festivals.
During the early phase of the last season, traders paid on an average Rs 900 per quintal of jaggery. This time they are offering on an average only Rs 650 per quintal.
During the last 12 days, nearly 16,000 lumps of 15 kg each arrived at the Anakapalli market.
