The World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO), a non-government organisation representing nuclear operators of 440 plants across the globe, would soon convene a meeting of its governing board to take stock of situation and suggest augmentation of safety and security measures in the wake of explosion of Fukushima reactors in Japan due to earthquake and tsunami.
The WANO governing board, which was to meet in April, is expected to pre-schedule its meeting sometime this month. The board has sent necessary advisories to its 12 members, which also includes India. India is represented by Nuclear Power Corporation Chairman and Managing Director S K Jain.
“WANO has already launched communication practically every after four hours with its members in 30 countries and sharing information with regard to the Japan incident. WANO is collecting information from its Tokyo centre and passing it to other members on matters relating to safety and security. Apart from the Tokyo centre, WANO has three other centres at Atlanta, Paris and Moscow,” Jain told Business Standard.
He said with safety as a goal, the London-headquartered WANO helped operators communicate effectively and shared information openly because experience showed many accidents could have been prevented if lessons had been learned from previous incidents. Ultimately, this would raise the performance of all operators to that of the best.
