After differences among major political parties over selection of party candidates for the two Rajya Sabha seats from Jharkhand, there is a move for early mid-term polls of the Jharkhand Assembly.

Before extending support to the Congress Rajya Sabha nominee Dheeraj Prasad Sahu, senior Congress leader in charge of Jharkhand K Keshav Rao had to promise Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) supremo Babulal Marandi on Sunday that he (Marandi) would be at the helm of affairs for the Congress-JVM coalition in the event of mid-term polls.

Babulal Marandi had been in the BJP at the time of constitution of Jharkhand state in November 2000. He became the first chief minister of Jharkhand as National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee. Later, he shifted to the national capital and joined the Union cabinet. Then, Arjun Munda of the BJP became the chief minister.

It should be mentioned that in the wake Marandi’s opposition against the re-nomination of Dheeraj Prasad Sahu for the Rajya Sabha seat, K Keshav Rao rushed to Ranchi from Delhi on Sunday and persuaded him not to break away from the alliance.

Elections for Jharkhand’s two Rajya Sabha seats will be held on June 17.

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has fielded Alchemist Hospital Group chairman Kanwar Deep Singh as its candidate.

The BJP has fielded former Rajya Sabha member Ajay Maroo for the Rajya Sabha biennials.
