CPI(M) patriarch Jyoti Basu today disapproved the trenchant criticism of his party by junior Left Front partners over Nandigram and other issues which he said was strengthening the hands of the opposition parties.

Basu also expressed dissatisfaction at the decision of the LF constituent Forward Bloc to contest the coming panchayat elections in West Bengal separately and not as a Front partner. He said open criticism of the government's policies and the CPI(M) on various counts was only helping the opposition to gain political mileage out of it.

"Is this the way to keep the Left unity intact? The words they are using are not conducive to maintain the Left unity," Basu said after attending a meeting of the CPI(M) state committee. He said CPI(M) state secretary Biman Bose, who is also the Left Front chairman in the state, was trying to sort out the differences but he had not yet succeeded.

"Biman is trying. I do not know what will be the outcome. If the criticism against our party is genuine we will accept. But what is the use of criticising us openly and thereby strengthening the hands of opposition," he said.
