Following strong opposition from the farming community, the Karnataka government has decided to review the proposed multi-product special economic zone (SEZ) at Nandagudi near Bangalore.

A decision to review the project was taken by the state cabinet that met here on Friday.

The SEZ has been proposed by Mumbai-based SKIL Infrastructure. More than 5,000 acre was to be acquired for the project. The local farming community, however, has opposed the acquisition of land. The Board of Approval (BoA) on SEZs deferred a decision on the SEZ owing to the opposition.

The state cabinet decided to constitute a committee, headed by Chief Secretary P B Mahishi, to submit a report on the SEZ. The committee will consist of officials of the finance, revenue and urban development departments.

"We will take a final decision on the project once the committee submits the report," Karnataka's Primary & Secondary Education Minister Basavaraja Horatti told reporters.
