The Supreme Court today ordered the Karnataka government to release 4,500 cusecs of water daily from the Mettur reservoir to Tamil Nadu till the decision of the Cauvery River Authority, expected on February 10.
The order was passed on an application by the Tamil Nadu government alleging that its Samba crop was withering due to shortage of water. It complained that Karnataka was not releasing water according to the orders of the apex court.
The three-judge Bench comprising Justice R C Lahoti, Justice Y K Sabharwal and Justice Arijit Pasayat clarified that the meeting of the authority should not be adjourned if any of the four participating chief ministers failed to attend it.
