Karzai seeks Indian investment in healthcare, agriculture

He called for Indian investment in prominent sectors including healthcare, agri business, telecom and capacity building

Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai today sought Indian investments in areas such as healthcare, agri business, telecom and capacity building.

In an interaction with a group of CII members, Karzai briefed the Indian investors on emerging business opportunities in Afghanistan and asked them to take advantage of the "business friendly regime and investment climate".

He called for Indian investment in prominent sectors including healthcare, agri business, telecom and capacity building, CII said in a statement.

Karzai, who is on a two-day visit to India, asked industry leaders to increase imports of dry fruits and fruits.

"He also briefed members on the increased scope and collaboration in new farming techniques, setting food processing unit and agriculture machinery  for improved agriculture produce in Afghanistan," it said.
 

Karzai also invited Indian hospitals to set up facilities in Afghanistan.

He said that the Afghan patients have to travel to India for medical treatment, especially cardiac patients.

Malvinder Mohan Singh, Chairman, CII Services Council and Executive Chairman, Fortis Healthcare, offered to set up facilities in Afghanistan and talent building centres in view of the shortage of trained doctors, practitioners and nurses.

The chamber stressed on setting up of India - Afghanistan CEOs Forum for strengthening and promoting investment and trade relations.

The bilateral trade between the countries stood at USD 639 million in 2011-12.
